Each epithelium has a TWO part name.
The FIRST part of the name is the NUMBER of cell layers.
The SECOND part of the name is the SHAPE of the cells.
For the FIRST part of the name for epithelial tissues the THREE options are:
__________________, ____________________________, _______________________________
For the SECOND part of the name for epithelial tissues the THREE options are:
___________________________, _________________________, __________________________
*Mnemonic devices are excellent tools to help students remember important facts. One such mnemonic
device you may be familiar with, is one that can be used to remember the planets in our solar system: My
Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas, for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.
Come up with a mnemonic device to remember the FOUR main tissue types:
Epithelial, Connective, Muscular, Nervous.
Come up with a mnemonic device to remember the FOUR main functions of epithelial tissue:
Protection, Absorption, Filtration, Secretion.
Come up with a mnemonic device to remember the FIVE main CHARACTERISTICS of epithelial tissue:
Abut = the cells abut each other; they form continuous sheets
Apical surface = there is always one unattached/free surface
Basement membrane = the lower surface of epithelial tissue rests on this layer
Avascular = epithelium does not have a blood supply of its own
Regenerate = these cells renew or regenerate quickly if near a blood supply
