+ Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Notes + In order to understand ourselves and others we must first know our basic needs. Basic needs are things you must have to be physically and mentally healthy, such as food, shelter, support and love. Basic needs are divided into physical needs and psychological needs Physical needs=things you need to survive (food, water, etc) Psychological needs= emotions and relationships (love, esteem, sense of worth, approval, etc.) + Humanist Psychology: Humanist focus upon potentials. Humanist do not believe that human being are pushed and pulled by mechanical forces, either of stimuli and reinforcements (behaviorism) or of unconscious instinctual impulses (psychoanalysis). They believe that humans strive for an upper level of capabilities. Humans seek the frontiers of creativity, the highest reaches of consciousness and wisdom. + Maslow said: All human behavior is motivated by a desire to satisfy needs. In order for a person to keep striving towards the ultimate in his/her growth there has to be a feeling of accomplishment Physiological (Physical) Needs Physiological Needs Food Air Water Sex Safety and Security • Protection • Stability • Pain Avoidance Safety Needs • Routine/Order Love and Belonging • Affection Love and Belonging • Acceptance • Inclusion Esteem Esteem Needs • Self-Respect • Self-Esteem • Respected by Others Self-Actualization Self-Actualization • Achieve full potential • Fulfillment Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Self-Actualization Esteem Belonging Safety Physiological + The last level=Self Actualization Some words that would describe Self Actualizing people might be: Moral Creative Spontaneous Lacks Prejudice Accepts Facts Examples of someone who is selfactualized might: Pray Problem Solve Develop Ideas that would help themselves and others.
