Chapter 10 Rock cycle Vocabulary 1. crystal: A solid in which the atoms are arranged in a pattern that repeats again and again 2. deposition: The process by which sediment settles out of the water or wind that is carrying it, and is deposited in a new location. 3. erosion: The process by which water, ice, wind, or gravity moves fragments of rock and soil. 4. extrusive rock: Igneous rock that forms from lava on Earth's surface. 5. grain: A particle of mineral or other rock that gives a rock its texture. 6. hardness: The Mohs hardness scale rates the hardness of minerals on a scale of 1 to 10. 7. igneous rock: A type of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or below the surface of Earth. 8. intrusive rock: Igneous rock that forms when magma hardens beneath Earth's surface. 9. luster: The way a mineral reflects light from its surface. 10. metamorphic rock: A type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. 11. mineral: is a solid, inorganic material that forms naturally on or beneath Earth's surface 12. rock: The material that forms Earth's hard surface. 13. rock cycle: A series of processes on the surface and inside earth that slowly changes rocks from one kind to another. 14. sediment: Small, solid particles of material from rocks or organisms which are moved by water or wind, resulting in erosion and deposition. 15. sedimentary rock: A type of rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together. 16. streak: The color of a mineral's powder. 17. texture: The size, shape, and pattern of a rock's grains.
