Proposed Project Name
Microarray-Based Genetic Testing for Congenital Malformations in
Gaza Strip
Importance of the project
The project results will reveal the genetic causes of many
childhood congenital malformations and that is of utmost
importance for genetic counseling and future prenatal and preimplantation genetic testing.
Project Theme
Genetic Testing for Congenital Malformations
The problem
Specific Objectives
Currently the genetic testing available in Gaza strip include
routine karyotyping and PCR-based testing for known gene
mutations. However, such genetic alterations represent only a
small fraction of the cases referred to our unit. For the majority
of cases the underlying cause remains unknown.
To improve the sensitivity of genetic testing we need to
introduce microarray-based comparative genomic
hybridization (CGH) and single nucleotide polymorphism
(SNP) analyses.
- To introduce microarray-based genetic testing into our
genetic diagnosis unit
- To explore the genetic causes of congenital malformations in
Gaza strip
- To provide appropriate genetic counseling to the affected
child family
- To make available prenatal and preimplantation genetic
testing for future pregnancies
