The aim of the activity is to analyze the methods mass media use language and images to persuade its targeted audience. To achieve this, I explored and analysed the advertising techniques of the two Milo (chocolate malt drink brand) commercials from Nestle (food and beverage company). I wanted the class to learn how to deconstruct the commercial for its elements, analyse the use of advertising techniques, and explore the methods that Nestlé targets children in its commercials using cultural values. Reflection: In the space below, write a well-developed essay that integrates the elements listed below. Be sure to include specific examples from your FOA to support your points. DUE within one week of viewing your FOA video. 1. Briefly summarize your oral activity in terms of the topic, thesis, and the activity you chose. 2. Comment on the strengths and weaknesses of your performance. 3. Comment on how successful you were in achieving your goal(s) (i.e. learning outcomes) in your FOA. 4. If you had to give your FOA again, would you do anything differently in terms of how you would prepare for it, how you would structure or organize the oral activity, or how you would perform or deliver it? ---------------------------------My activity was a PowerPoint presentation to show how Nestle uses advertising techniques to persuade children to buy its products. In this activity, I compared two Milo video advertisements by using SOAPSToneS analysis, and I deconstructed the advertising elements and analysed their use of advertising techniques. One of the strengths was my presentation was very organized. At the beginning of the presentation, I briefly introduced Nestle and the advertising product, Milo. When analysing each of the Milo commercials, I clearly labelled and analysed them in separate slides as, SOAPStoneS, Elements of Milo Commercial, and at the end, I compared both of their advertising techniques together into one slide. This made my PowerPoint presentation easier to read and understand. Another strength was that I maintained good eye contact with the audience and was less dependent on reading the PowerPoint compared to most people who presented their FOA’s in class. One of the biggest weaknesses is that I displayed obvious signs of nervousness throughout my presentation. There were many pauses in my sentences and I used many vocal fillers when speaking through the whole presentation. This caused my presentation to not flow as smoothly as I expected and it slightly hampered the clarity of my presentation. Also, I did not realise that my body was swaying from left to right and was constantly adjusting my glasses. The excessive body movements distracted the audience from my presentation. My learning outcome is to “show the way mass media use language and image to persuade.” I was very successful at breaking down the two commercials and analyzing its advertising techniques used by Nestlé to persuade its consumers. Also, I was successful at showing the awareness of cultural values in the two commercials. I chose two Milo commercials from different countries to show the different cultural values in the Milo Commercial that Nestle uses to target its audience. Association through sports is a huge theme in Milo advertisements. I talked about how Nestle uses cricket and rugby, to target Australia and New Zealand consumers, and basketball to target Filipino consumers. Aside from the association of sports, I talked about the value of education in Philippines and how Nestle uses students and schools in its commercials to target Filipino consumers. If you had to give your FOA again, I would definitely practice a few more rounds before presenting. To improve the flow of my presentation, and reduce the use of vocal fillers and pauses, I would make note cards to as a reminder for my points, so I would not make as many pauses in my sentences and will not have to worry about missing out a point. Also, to improve the analysis of the advertisements, I would display examples of pictures of the elements of the advertisements and the advertising techniques in my PowerPoint to increase the clarity and help the audience understand better.
