Biology Vocabulary Words Weeks 1-4 1. Germinate – when seeds sprout or grow 2. Dormant – alive but not active 3. Biology – the study of life 4. Biosphere – any place on Earth where you can find living organisms 5. Biome – large areas around the Earth that have similar characteristics, like plants, temperature and rainfall 6. Biotic – living 7. Abiotic – nonliving 8. Autotroph – makes its own food using sunlight (self feeding) 9. Heterotroph – organisms that have to eat, ingest, absorb their food – organisms that cannot make their own food 10. Trophic Levels – feeding groups 11. Consumer – organisms that have to eat, ingest, absorb their food – organisms that cannot make their own food (notice this is synonymous with heterotroph) 12. Decomposer – organisms that eat dead organisms causing them to break down and decay (recycles matter) 13. Producer – organisms that make their own food using sunlight (notice this is synonymous with autotroph and photosynthetic) 14. Homeostasis – maintaining an internal balance 15. Respond to Stimuli – reacts to changing conditions 16. Scavenger – an organism that eats dead organisms 17. Herbivores – an organism that eats plants, photosynthetic bacteria, or photosynthetic algae 18. Omnivores – an organism that eats plants, (or photosynthetic bacteria, or photosynthetic algae) and animals 19. Carnivores – an organism that eats 20. Habitat – where an organism lives 21. Niche – an organism’s job or role in an ecosystem 22. Competition – challenges among or between species for limiting factors like food, water, and shelter 23. Species – organisms that are similar and can successfully interbreed 24. Population – a group of the same species in an area 25. Community – all the different populations in an area (so all the biotic factors – living organisms) in an area 26. Ecosystem – all the abiotic and biotic factors in an area 27. Limiting Factors – any abiotic or biotic factor that will affect species survival
