Mental Disorders – A mental or emotional condition that makes it difficult
for a person to live in a normal way
Some examples of Mental Disorders covered in class:
Affective Disorders (Mood Disorder)
Disturbance in a person’s mood…such as a depressive mood or a bipolar (split personality) mood. A
disorder involving extreme moods.
-Clinical Depression - involves long lasting feelings of hopelessness, sadness or helplessness
-Bipolar disorder - a person's moods vary from extreme happiness to depression
-Seasonal Affective disorder - is a type of depression caused by reduced exposure to sunlight

Personality Disorder
Severe disturbances in the behavioral tendencies of an individual, usually involving several areas of a
person’s personality
- Antisocial personality - patterns of behavior that are in conflict with society
- Avoidant personality - avoids all social contact
- Dependent personality - cannot function without the advice and help of others
- Narcissistic personality - is boastful, conceited ad inconsiderate of others

Anxiety Disorder
Abnormal fear and dread…sweating, palpitations, muscle tension, fatigue, and irritability...a disorder
in which real or imagined fears prevent a person from enjoying life.
- Phobia – exaggerated fear of a object or situation...excessive fear of certain objects, situations or
people
-Panic disorder – exaggerated feeling of fear
-Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – Obsessive and Compulsive feelings over situations and
actions...urgent need to repeat a thought or action
-Post Traumatic Stress syndrome – Severe fear and feelings relating to a past negative
experience...a condition in which the after-effects of a past event keep a person from living in a
normal way

Dissociate Disorder
Conditions that involve a disruption or breakdowns in memory, awareness, identity and/or perception
- Amnesia - is the inability to recall past experiences
- Dissociative identity disorder - rare mental disorder in which two or more personalities coexist
within the same person

Somatoform Disorder
Mental disorder characterized by physical symptoms that mimic physical disease or injury for which
there is no identifiable physical cause
- Hypochondria - is constantly worried about illness.
