Christian pilgrims had already reported they were abused in Palestine, so he welcomed the request. 3. What did Pope Urban ask of the church leaders and feudal lords? Urban wanted to regain the holy land from the Muslims (Turks). In 1095, he called a meeting with the Church leaders and feudal lords. He asked everyone to stop fighting each other and join together in war against the Turks (to win back the holy land). 4. What did the uniform look like for the Crusaders? The uniform would have a cross on their shoulder or back. 5. Explain what the Crusades were? A series of military expeditions to regain the Holy land. At least 10,000 Europeans joined in. The latin word for crusades means “marked with a cross” 6. Why did crusaders join the cause? Different reasons -Some went to save their souls-believed if they died on the crusade they would go straight to heaven -Some knights hoped to gain land and wealth in Palestine and southwest Asia -Some merchants saw a chance to make money ***Desire for rewards both spiritual and economical
