Crusades Mrs. Tepel So what is a Crusade? • A vigorous concerted movement for a cause or against an abuse • Any of the military expeditions undertaken by European Christians in the 11th, 12th, and 13th century. Where did it happen? Where is that in relationship to Europe Why was the Holy Land important? • Judaism-divine gift of God because of covenants. • Christianity-Jesus spent much of his life there. He was crucified there. He rose from the dead. • Islam-a holy city because Mohammad is said to have gone there on his trip to heaven. House of the Dome built there on the site. • How did these “Holy Wars” Begin? • Alexius Comnenus is the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire And so… • He is in Constantinople and there are Muslim Turks not far away. He needs some extra fighting power so he writes a letter to Robert of Flanders. Robert of Flanders shows the letter to the Pope. The Pope is Pope Urban. Pope Urban decides to answer the call for help and more.. • He calls for the Crusades to recover Jerusalem from the Muslim Turks • He calls for the Crusades to help Alexius • He calls for the Crusades to do something with the knights who are causing havoc in Europe. Causes of the Crusades • Muslims control Palestine (the Holy Land) and threaten Constantinople • Byzantine emperor calls for help • Pope wants to reclaim Palestine and reunite Christendom. • Italian cities desire commercial power. Why go on the Crusades? • • • • • • • • The Pope said to go God wills it Save the Holy Land Go to heaven Adventure Your lord is going and you have to go too. Riches A chance to fight the infidels!! . How many Crusades? • The first was 1096 and the last was 1270. • Most people died before actually reaching the holy land. • There were 8 plus the Peasant’s Crusade and the Children’s Crusade. That is over 170 years of war!! Effects of the Crusades • • • • • • • Byzantine empire is weakened. Pope’s power declines. Power of feudal nobles weakens Religious intolerance grows Italian cities expand trade and grow rich. Muslims increasingly distrust Christians. Trade grows between Europe and the Middle East. • European technology improves as Crusaders learn from Muslims.
