Assignment #8.1 Atoms and Their Parts
Name: ______________________________________________________ Period: ________
Atoms and Their Parts
Protons, Neutrons, Electrons
Substances that contain only one kind of atom are called elements. Some familiar elements are
oxygen, gold, silver, and helium. An atom is the smallest part of an element that can be broken down
and still have the characteristics of that element. All atoms have the same basic structure.
All atoms have three main parts.
Protons
A proton is positively charged and is located in the center or nucleus of the atom. Protons have a mass
of 1. All atoms of the same element have the same number of protons. The number of protons in the
nucleus is call the atomic number and tells you what the element is. A different number of protons
would mean you have a different element. The elements are arranged by number of protons in the
PERIODIC TABLE.
Electrons
Electrons are negatively charged and are located in shells or orbits spinning around the nucleus. The
number of protons and electrons are usually equal. This equality is important so that the atom as a
whole is neither positively nor negatively charged. It is said to be neutral. Electrons have nearly 0
mass.
Electrons orbit in specific locations starting closest to the nucleus. Two electrons fit in the first orbit, or
shell. Eight fit in the next biggest shell and eight fit in the third shell.
Neutrons
The third part of an atom is the neutron. Neutrons are neither positive nor negative and are located in
the center of the nucleus of an atom along with the protons. Protons and neutrons are the massive
parts of an atom. The mass of a neutron is 1.
Atomic Weight/Mass Number
An atom’s mass comes from adding the mass of the protons and the neutrons. Electrons do not count
because they have extremely small mass.
Fill out the table below to help you understand the basics about protons, electrons, and
neutrons.
