Atomic Structure and Radiation
Study Guide and Materials!
My Name is: ________________________________ and I love to study chem!
What to know:
1. Scientists- be able to explain their contributions and experiments
a. Democritus
b. Dalton
c. Thomson
d. Milliken
e. Rutherford
2. Atomic Structure
a. Be able to describe the parts of an atom.
b. Know the difference between mass number and average atomic mass.
c. Be able to calculate the average atomic mass of a set of isotopes.
d. Be able to draw a picture (or write a clear description) that represents
each different model of the atom.
e. Know the difference between an atom, ion, and isotope.
f. Be able to count the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an
atom, ion or isotope.
3. Nuclear Chemistry
a. Know the particles of radiation and how they are different from each
other.
b. Be able to fill in the missing particle from a nuclear reaction.
c. Be able to look at a nuclear reaction and describe it as either alpha,
beta, or gama decay.
d. Be able to calculate how much of a sample is left after some number of
half lives.
e. Be able to calculate how many half lives have passed based on how
much is left over.
f. Be able to use the band of stability to explain why an isotope is stable,
radioactive, or non-existent.
