Unit 4: Genetics
This unit will allow each student to:
a. gain a better understanding of inheritance and the various modes of inheritance
b. continue making proper scientific measurements and calculations
c. define and properly use all vocabulary
d. properly apply all terms and concepts in describing/explaining real world examples
e. make and interpret scientific graphs and diagrams
f. teach someone else the concepts discussed
g. practice proper laboratory safety
This will be accomplished by each student that is able to:
1. explain the significance of Mendel’s experiments to the study of genetics
2. summarize the law of segregation and the law of independent assortment
3. predict the possible offspring phenotypic and genotypic ratios from a cross using a Punnett
square
4. summarize how the process of meiosis produces genetic recombination
5. explain how gene linkage can be used to create chromosome maps
6. analyze why polyploidy is important to the field of agriculture
7. analyze genetic patterns to determine dominant or recessive inheritance patterns
8. summarize examples of dominant and recessive disorders
9. construct human pedigrees from genetic information
10. distinguish between various complex inheritance patterns
11. analyze sex-linked and sex-limited inheritance patterns
12. explain how the environment can influence the phenotype of an organism
13. distinguish normal karyotypes form those with abnormal numbers of chromosomes
14. relate the effect of nondisjunction to Down syndrome and other abnormal chromosome
numbers
15. assess the benefits and risks of diagnostic fetal testing
