MATHEMATICS UNIT PLANNER VELS Level Term: 2 Year: 2010 Yarraville West Focus: Place Value (up to 1000’s) Dimension: Number VELS Learning Focus Statement: At Level 2, students model the place value of the natural numbers from 0 to 1000. They order numbers and count to 1000 by 1’s, 10’s and 100’s. Verbally talk about how the number is made up using thousands, hundred, tens and ones. Walk & Talk 2 Tell me something about 1000. Pick it out – starting with 3 digits, moving to 4 digits. Verbally discuss how the number is made up. Look at what the chance of drawing out numbers is. Secrets of your success 3 Human Number Line – give students numbers and place themselves in order. Start with 3 digits and move to 4 digits. Traffic Lights – Play game only using thousands. Have students read competed numbers. Extended notation – make numbers using number expanders My number is….. similar to the tens and ones sheet students will use photocopied Base 10 to stick on a number, they will then complete the sentences. “My number is…..” “It has ____ thousands, ____ hundreds, ____ tens, ____ ones.” 3, 2, 1 5 moves to 100 (then to 1000) will need calculators, can work in pairs.
