LQA&E PROGRAM TRAINING Level 1 Lesson 4 Read and Follow Labels Read and Follow Labels Level I •This lesson will cover reading the feed label and the medication label. •It also stresses the use of keeping current & accurate feed and medication records. •We recognize that in keeping with age appropriateness of Level I, that primary responsibility is that of the parent. Read and Follow Labels Learner outcomes: Participants will be able to: • Read label instructions for use of feed additives & drugs • Identify veterinarian/client/patient relationship (VCPR) • Identify who is responsible for animals in violation of drug residue or foreign material in the carcass • Maintain an animal treatment record and feed record • Identify and track animals to which drugs were administered • Understand the importance of observing withdrawal times to avoid marketing adulterated animal products for human consumption. Read and Follow Labels This lesson •Follows the established format •Includes several activities that reinforce the information presented •Stresses the producers responsibility in feeding and administering medications •Creates an awareness of ways to identify animals receiving medications – along with methods that should not be used Read and Follow Labels • Stresses the producers responsibility of keeping accurate records of medications administered, regardless of route of administration or if in a medicated feed. • Stresses reading the label to understand if there are withdrawal periods before an animal or animal byproduct can be marketed for human food. Read and Follow Labels • Activities – Reading a feed label, is it a medicated feed? • Nutritional products cannot take the place of good genetics, proper management & care • Recognize what species feed is formulated for and what the expected outcome of using the medicated feed is • Be aware of side effects in using some medicated feeds • How & what information to record Read and Follow Labels • Activity – The Drug Product Label • Importance of knowing: – Prescribed or Overthe-Counter Drug – Species intended for – Amounts to administer – Route of administration – If there is a withdrawal period – How to record the medication treatment Read and Follow Labels • Activity – Drug Residue • Visual simulation of drug residue • Common areas where drug residues could be found • Reason for concern – BINGO – new activity • Used as a review activity
