Record 7: STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR FEEDING MEDICATED FEED
1. Bags of medicated feed are stored in the feed room and are specifically identified
«Medicated feed for calves only».
2. Heifers from 0 to 3 months of age are given complete feed (Golistar) containing
Deccox (authorized by a veterinary prescription). It is fed free-choice. The opened bag
is placed, in front of the heifers, in a container that must remain closed, with a cup.
Both container and cup are identified «Medicated feed for calves only».
3. Heifers from 3 to 6 months of age are fed Goliath 31 protein supplement with
Rumensin (authorized by a veterinary prescription). It is given twice a day (morning
and evening) at a rate of 800 g per heifer per meal. The opened bag is placed, in front
of the heifers, in a container that must remain closed, with a 400g cup. Both container
and cup are identified «Medicated feed for calves only».
4. Heifers from 6 months to 5 weeks before calving are fed Goliath 40 protein supplement
with Rumensin (authorized by a veterinary prescription). It is given twice a day
(morning and evening) at a rate of 400 g per heifer per meal. The opened bag is placed,
in front of the heifers, in a container that must remain closed, with a 400g cup. Both
container and cup are identified «Medicated feed for calves only».
5. Veterinary prescriptions for these products are found in the Prescription section of the
reference binder.
6. Never feed medicated feed or supplements to lactating cows.
7. If a lactating cow eats some medicated feed, refer to record # 16 : Corrective action plans
