The Respiratory System • The process of breathing in is called inhalation or inspiration. • The process of breathing out is called exhalation or expiration. The Respiratory System Chapter 16.3 • Respiration is the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between living cells and their environment. • Alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged. Respiratory Problems • Asthma is a condition where the bronchial tubes in the lungs narrow causing wheezing and the feeling of not taking in enough air. • Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial tubes. • Emphysema is when the alveoli stiffen, and enlarge making it difficult to get rid of old air and take in fresh air. Cellular Respiration • The process in which cells use oxygen to release energy stored in sugar molecules. • During this process carbon dioxide and water are made. These products are then carried by the blood back to the lungs to be exhaled. • The respiratory system is a group of organs whose main function is to take in oxygen and expel(get rid of ) carbon dioxide. • It works with the cardiovascular system to deliver oxygen to the body’s cells Respiratory System Anatomy • Pharynx- the passage from the mouth to the larynx and esophagus • Larynx- the area of the throat that contains vocal cords and produces vocal sounds • Trachea- the tube connecting larynx and lungs • Bronchi- two tubes connecting lungs and trachea
