Cell Theory Important contributors Anton Van Leeuwenhoek: In 1600’s used a single lens microscope to view bacteria. Cell Theory Leeuwenhoek’s single lens microscope Cell Theory Robert Hooke: Looked at cork and called the structures cells. Cell Theory Robert Brown: In the 1800’s was the first to describe the nucleus. Cell Theory Matthias Schleiden: Looked at plant cells. Developed idea that all plants are made of cells. Cell Theory Theodor Schwann: Looked at animal cells. Extended cell theory to animals. Cell Theory Rudolph Virchow: German doctor. Developed one of the central ideas of cell theory, cells come from pre-existing cells. Cell Theory Cell Theory – fundamental idea of biology Three main parts of the theory. Cell Theory 1) All living things are made of one or more cells. Cell Theory 2) Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. Cell Theory 3) All cells come from other cells.
