The Endocrine System Nerves deliver messages electrically while hormones deliver messages chemically. Overview Glands of the endocrine system secrete hormones as chemical messengers (hormones). About 100 different hormones have been identified. The pituitary, pancreas, thyroid, adrenals, and gonads are a few of the endocrine glands. Pituitary The pituitary gland is considered our master gland, which produces hormones to direct growth and sexual development. Gonads In females, the ovaries produce estrogen. In males, the testes produce testosterone. Adrenals Produce cortisol, which stimulates the body to waken. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are produced and affect the feelings of fear and anger. Thyroid Influences the rate at which we process food and burn fat. Pancreas Produces insulin and glucagon, which regulate sugar levels in the blood. Insulin reduces the level Glucagon raises the level. Function is like a thermostat maintaining temperature. Summary: Write a paragraph explaining how the nervous system responding to stimuli is similar to the endocrine glands secreting hormones in feedback loops. Remember homeostasis (hint feedback loops).
