Your logo Guidance • This is a suggested template • Please modify as required • OR do your own presentation to suit your organisation • Notes are for information only and can be deleted from the main slides or moved to the notes view Sustainable Energy Slide 1 Version : Your logo Sustainable Energy Overview Objective: Convince the organisation that energy management is an important issue because: • Fossil fuels will run out • Climate change is a result of CO2 emissions due to burning fossil fuels and deforestation • Ireland has committed to reduce CO2 emissions under the Kyoto protocol • Carbon taxes will be introduced from 2004 • EU and Irish legislation will drive introduction of sustainable practices Sustainable Energy Slide 2 Version : Your logo Agenda • Energy is finite • Climate Change • Sustainability • Kyoto • What is a tonne of CO2 ? Sustainable Energy Slide 3 Version : Your logo Energy is Finite 2000 BC 1750 AD 2200 AD 6000 AD • Notes: • Most of the earth’s fossil have been used since the industrial revolution • Current projection for oil reserves is about 50 years with about 200 years for coal Sustainable Energy Slide 4 Version : Your logo Climate Change ? • • Pied Flycatcher Notes: Dr. John Sweeney, Dept. of Geography, NUI Maynooth thinks so. He is studying bird migration. The Pied Flycatcher is a Mediterranean bird now making it’s home in Ireland Sustainable Energy Slide 5 Version : Your logo Sustainability www.sei.ie • Notes: • “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” Brundtland Commission definition of sustainability • Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) , formerly the Irish Energy Centre, was established as a separate statutory body in May 2002 as recommended by the Irish Green Paper on Sustainable Energy. • A summary of the Green Paper can be accessed at: http://www.irlgov.ie/tec/energy/greenpaper/execsum.html Sustainable Energy Slide 6 Version : Your logo Kyoto Fig : Ireland’s CO2 emissions profile from O’Rourke 2003 Notes : • Ireland’s Kyoto target for the period 2008 –2012 was breached in 1997. By 2001, annual GHG emissions were 27% above 1990 levels and projections in the National Climate Change Strategy indicate that emissions levels may rise to 37% above 1990 levels by 2010 if the country continues on a ‘business as usual’ path. The most significant area of growth is in energy related emissions in particular since 1995 .
