Glacial Recession and Landscape Changes
(Animation)
1850 - 2100
As climate warms and glaciers melt, mountain
systems, and the downstream communities they
serve, are losing an important source of fresh water.
Pika
Mountain Goat
Jones Columbine
Of major concern is the potential loss of alpine and subalpine
environments that provide prime habitat for plants such as Jones
Columbine and White Mountain Avens, animals like bighorn sheep and
mountain goats, and winter hibernation space for bears.
Climate Change and our Economy
Recent low summer flows along certain streams and
rivers has forced the Montana Department of Fish,
Wildlife & Parks to close some of the state’s most
storied streams to fishing.
Ski resorts will likely experience
shorter seasons
According to the Montana Bureau of Business and Economic
Research (MBBER), temperature changes have already had an
impact on Montana’s tourism industry.
