You must first find your verb
• Decide if your verb is action or linking.
• Remember----linking verbs are am, is, are,
was, were, be, being, been. BLASSST
FRG!
If you have an ACTION verb…
• Ask who or what after the verb.
• The answer should be a noun or pronoun.
• That word will be your DIRECT OBJECT!
John ran the race with his friends.
RAN is your verb
John ran WHAT?
RACE = direct object
If you have a DIRECT OBJECT…
• Ask to whom, for whom, to what, for what
after the verb and direct object.
• The answer will be a noun or pronoun and
will be your INDIRECT OBJECT.
Mark issued his classmates an ultimatum to
pass the test.
Issued who or what?
ULITMATUM = direct object
Issued an ultimatum TO WHOM?
CLASSMATES = indirect object

CAN ONLY
HAVE DIRECT
AND INDIRECT
OBJECTS
If you have a linking verb…
• Ask who or what after the verb.
• The answer should be a noun, pronoun, or
adjective.
• If the answer is a noun or pronoun, you
have a predicate nominative.
• If the answer is an adjective, you have a
predicate adjective.
• Alex is a very smart student in this school.
Alex is WHO or WHAT?
STUDENT is the answer.
Student is a NOUN = PREDICATE NOMINATIVE
The leather chair in the living room is ugly.
Chair is WHO or WHAT?
UGLY is the answer.
Ugly is an ADJECTIVE = PREDICATE ADJ.
