Types of Clauses

There are two types of clauses:
Independent
Dependent
What do these words mean?
Independent Clauses

An independent clause has a subject and a verb and can
stand alone by itself and make complete sense
I went to the store and bought candy.
Dependent Clauses

Dependent clauses have a subject and a verb but can
not stand alone. They need other words to help them
make sense.
When I woke up
When I woke up? …what
Dependent clause or
Independent clause?

Please write the clause and only IC (for independent
clause) or DC (for dependent clause):
1. Susan or Jim will go
2. Although the desert has a harsh climate
3. After the bridge collapsed
4. Harriet Tubman was born a slave
5. When she was six years old
Sentence Structure

Simple sentence:
A simple sentence is made up of ONE independent
clause.
That one independent clause may have one or two
subjects or one or two verbs.
Example:
Karen and Patty danced and sang all through the night.
Compound Sentence

A compound sentence is made up of two independent
clauses connected with a coordinating
conjunction and a comma.
For
An easy way to remember coordinating
And
Nor
conjunctions is F.A.N.B.O.Y.S.
But
Example: Peggy loves tennis, and Rosa
Or
loves yoga.
Yet
So
Complex sentence

A complex sentence is made up of one independent
clause and one dependent clause. The dependent
clause begins with a subordinating conjunction:
AAAWWUBIS (say “Ah-woo-bis)” this will help you
remember the most commonly used subordinating
conjunctions.
Example:
When Carol came home from school, she made a snack.
