• If the reporting verb (e.g. said) is in the past, the verb in
the noun clause will usually also be in a past form: She
said she watched TV every day.
• Sometimes in spoken English, no change is made in the
noun clause verb, especially if the speaker is reporting
something immediately or soon after it was said.
• Immediate reporting: A: What did the teacher just say? I
didn’t hear him -- B:He said he wants us to read Chapter
Six.
• Sometimes the present tense is retained when the
reported sentence deals with a general truth: She said
that the world is round.

• Subjunctive is used in a noun clause that follows
certain verbs and expressions.
• Subjunctive generally stresses importance.
• The subjunctive verb is used only in its simple
form; it is neither singular nor plural.
• e.g. The teacher demands that we be on time.
• e.g. I insisted that he pay me the money.
• Negative: not + simple form, e.g. I recommended
that she not go to the concert.
Conditional Clause - Type I
• True in the present/future
• If I don’t eat breakfast, I always get hungry
during class.
• If the weather is nice tomorrow, we will go
on a picnic.
