thought. It can have

Joining Subjects and Verbs
• A compound subject or a compound verb
can be created by using the conjunctions
and or but. These are simple sentences.
• The Chargers and the 49ers are great
football teams.
• Mike will cook the meal but will buy the
dessert.
• Create one using a compound S or V.

What is a compound sentence?
• A compound sentence has two independent
clauses put together by a conjunction (and, but,
yet, for, or.) or a semi-colon (;).
• The cat ran up the tree, and it remained there.
• He studied, yet he did not believe his score.
• (You) Don’t touch the frog; it is poisonous.
Don’t touch the frog, for it is poisonous.
• Don’t corner the raccoon, for it will attack.
• Don’t corner the raccoon; it will attack.
Join two related sentences when
there are two important ideas.
• Original: A group of frogs is called an army. A
group of turtles is called a bale.
• Combined: A group of frogs is called an army,
and a group of turtles is called a bale.

What is a clause?
• A clause is a group of words that contains a
subject and a verb within a sentence.
• *Independent clause:
*Also called main clause because it can be a
complete sentence on its own.
• **Subordinate clause: (**Before he trained for
football,) *he worked out daily.
**Also called dependent because it depends on the
main clause for meaning.
What is an independent or main
clause?
• An independent clause contains a subject and a
verb and is a complete thought. Stands on its own.
• A compound sentence has two independent
clauses connected by a comma and a coordinating
conjunction.
• List of conjunctions: and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet
Ex.[ Bob jumped up], and [Mary ran into him.]
Bob loved Mary, yet Mary loved Joe.
Examples of one independent clause

Example: Compound sentence
• Bob trained for football, and Bill stayed in
soccer.

Example: Complex sentence:
• Before Bob trained for football, he had
considered playing soccer with Bill.
• (1 subordinate clause and an independent
clause) This creates a complex sentence.
What is a complex sentence?
• A complex sentence has an independent
clause and a dependent clause. A comma
may separate these clauses.
• (While the cat clung to the tree branch),[ the
dog barked wildly from below.]
• [The cat was running scared] (since he
was chased by the dog.)
Can combine sentences by using an
independent and dependent clause
to create a complex sentence.
• Original: The drawbridge was pulled up. The
enemy knights could not get into the castle.
• Combined: When the drawbridge was pulled
up, the enemy knights could not get into the
castle.

Compound-Complex Sentence
• Although he smoked, he ran five miles a day
and he climbed two flights of stairs.
• Underline subjects once and verb phrases
twice. Put parentheses around the
subordinate clause. Put squares around the
independent/main clauses.
• Sample: [It was raining], but [the sun was
shining] (when we looked out the window.)
