Present Progressive
Verbs
What is a verb?
A verb is an action or a state of being. It
shows what is happening in the
sentence.
For example:
Hector is driving to the store.
-------------------------------------------
What is a progressive verb?
* A progressive verb shows something that
is happening right now.
* Progressive verbs always end with the
letters –ing.
How can you find a
progressive verb in a
sentence?
One way to find progressive verbs in a
sentence is to look for the –ing at the
end of the verb.
Progressive verbs always have helping
verbs. These verbs, like am, is, are, and
be, come before a progressive verb in a
sentence.
Let’s look at some sentences
with progressive verbs!
Ahmed and Victor are playing soccer.
-------------------------------------------------
Maria is eating a sandwich.
-------------------------------------
I am studying for my science test.
--------------------------------------------------------
How do I know what helper
verb to use with a
progressive verb?
The subject (noun) that comes before the
verb will tell you what helper verb you
need to use.
I am walking.
--------------------------------------------------
One thing is walking.
----------------------------------------------
Many things are walking.
---------------------------------------------------
What happens when I change
a regular verb to a present
progressive verb?
For a verb like freeze, drop the “e” and –ing.
freeze  freezing
For a verb like walk, just add –ing.
walk  walking
For a verb like run, double the last letter, and add –ing.
run 
running
Let’s Practice!
First, choose the helper verb. Then, change the verb to a progressive verb.
Rosa (sit) ___ ___________ in her desk.
I (listen) ___ ___________ to music on my Ipod.
Some people (starve) ___ _____________,
because they do not have enough food to eat.
