Welcome to MT140 Introduction to Management Unit 8 Seminar Ethics and Social Responsibility Agenda • • • • • • • • General Questions and Announcements Introduction Discuss process of making ethical decisions. / Questions and Answers Recognize the components of a diversified workforce/ Questions and Answers Define and discuss sexual harassment/ Questions and Answers Recap Unit Assignment Q & A Conclusion of Seminar Ethics • Ethics -The system of rules that governs the ordering of values 3-3 Telling the Truth and Lying: Possible Outcomes Table 3.1 3-4 It’s a Personal Issue • Most of us believe we are ethical but most have unconscious biases that favor ourselves and their own group 3-5 It’s a Personal Issue • Managers often: -Hire people who are like them -Think they are immune to conflicts of interest -Take more credit than they deserve -Blame others when they deserve some blame themselves 3-6 It’s a Personal Issue • Is it ethical to: -Shop online during company time? -Using office equipment for personal use? -Read personal emails while at work? 3-7 It’s a Personal Issue Besides lost productivity, employers are most concerned about: • computer users introducing viruses • leaking confidential information • creating a hostile work environment by downloading inappropriate Web content 3-8 Ethics • Ethical issue -Situation, problem, or opportunity in which an individual must choose among several actions that must be evaluated as morally right or wrong • Business ethics -The moral principles and standards that guide behavior in the world of business. 3-9 Ethical Systems • Moral philosophy -Principles, rules, and values people use in deciding what is right or wrong • Universalism -The ethical system stating that all people should uphold certain values that society needs to function. 3-10 Corporate Ethical Standards • Ethical leader -One who is both a moral person and a moral manager influencing others to behave ethically. 3-11 Ethics Programs • Compliance-based ethics programs -Company mechanisms typically designed by corporate counsel to prevent, detect, and punish legal violations. 3-12 Ethics Programs • Integrity-based ethics programs -Company mechanisms designed to instill in people a personal responsibility for ethical behavior 3-13 The Business Costs of Ethical Failure Figure 3.2 3-14 Corporate Social Responsibility • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) -Obligation toward society assumed by business. 3-15 Corporate Social Responsibility • Economic responsibilities -To produce goods and services that society wants at a price that perpetuates the business and satisfies its obligations to investors. • Legal responsibilities -To obey local, state, federal, and relevant international laws 3-16 Corporate Social Responsibility • Ethical responsibilities -Meeting other social expectations, not written as law. 3-17 Corporate Social Responsibility • Philanthropic responsibilities -Additional behaviors and activities that society finds desirable and that the values of the business support. 3-18 Managing Diversity • Involves recruiting, training, promoting, and utilizing to full advantage individuals with different backgrounds, beliefs, capabilities, and cultures. • Understanding and deeply valuing employee differences to build a more effective and profitable organization. • Valuing the connections that arise and develop between diverse employees. Components of a Diversified Workforce Figure 8.1 8-20 Diversity Today • Diversity -Differences that include religious affiliation, age, disability status, military experience, sexual orientation, economic class, educational level, lifestyle, gender, race, ethnicity, and nationality 8-21 Gender Issues • Glass ceiling -an invisible barrier making it difficult for women and minorities to move beyond a certain level in the corporate hierarchy 8-22 Gender Issues • Sexual harassment -Conduct of a sexual nature that has negative consequences for employment. 8-23 Sexual Harassment • Quid pro quo harassment -Submission to or rejection of sexual conduct is used as a basis for employment decisions • Hostile environment -Occurs when unwelcome sexual conduct has the effect of unreasonably interfering with job performance or creating an intimidating or hostile, working environment 8-24 Basic Components of an Effective Sexual Harassment Policy 8-25 Recap • In this seminar, we have discussed: -The process of making ethical decisions -The components of a diversified workforce -Sexual harassment in the workplace Assignment Questions and Answers There are three graded assignments in Unit 8: 1.Review 2.Discussion Assignment 3.Dropbox Assignment Are there questions concerning how you are expected to complete and submit these assignments? Review • Don’t forget that you can take the Review as often as you need to prior to the Tuesday midnight deadline until you get the score that you desire. Discussion Assignment – Unit 8 • Scenario: One Sandwich Blitz location is near a public assistance housing complex, which is populated by a large segment of displaced natural disaster victims, many of whom are of various ethnic minority groups. While sales are still good, this location has been the target of two armed robberies over the past year. Some employees have voiced their concern over working at this particular location. Local community leaders have urged Dalman and Lei to keep this location open and told them about a local neighborhood improvement initiative designed to make this neighborhood safer and more attractive. Sandwich Blitz has one more year left on a five-year lease agreement. Refer to textbook; then discuss the concept of corporate social responsibility as it applies to this scenario. Make sure to discuss the following: Based on your reading on Corporate Social Responsibility what should Lei and Dalman do in this situation? In your response make sure to refer to textbook material.
