Kaitlynn Bowdridge The digestive system breaks down and changes food into smaller molecules of nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to cells all over the body. This is what provides fuel for your body. Mouth – Moistens and breaks the food up into small pieces so it can be swallowed down into the esophagus. Esophagus – Continuous muscle movements bring the food through the esophagus and down into the stomach. Stomach – Churns the food in lots of acids and enzymes to turn it into chime. Small intestine – In the small intestine bile, pancreatic enzymes and other enzymes all help break down the food. The three parts of the small intestine are the duodenum, the jejunum and, the ileum. Large intestine – In the large intestine is where most of the liquid is taken out of the food. The three major parts of the large intestine are the cecum, the colon and the rectum. Rectum – This is where the waste is stored until it leaves the anus. Anus – This is the end of the digestive system and where waste leaves the body. The gallbladder, liver and pancreas are also very important parts of the digestive system. They produce and store digestive juices. Eat foods with lots of fiber to help keep food moving through your digestive system tract Don’t eat lots of foods that are high in fat because it will slow down the digestive process Drink lots of water because having water in you digestive system will help dissolve fat Avoid smoking and alcohol because liquor, coffee and cigarettes can change the way your digestive system works Exercise regularly because it will keep the food moving through the digestive system Gallstones can be any size. A person can have lots of small gallstones or few large gallstones. Gallstones that are in the gallbladder don’t normally cause problems but they may hurt after a person has a fatty meal. Gallstones may cause problems if they move out of the gallbladder, blocking the ducts connecting the gallbladder, liver, or pancreas to the intestine, trapping bile or digestive enzymes. This may cause inflammation and very severe pain. It may also cause infection or organ damage. If these conditions go without being treated, they may even cause death. Eating lots of fatty foods Don’t drink water Smoke and drink alcohol Don’t exercise
