It is a survey of the various theoretical perspectives on major psychological disorders, the course of the disorder, the assessment tools used for diagnosis & the commonly used treatment modalities. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. To understand what constitutes abnormal behavior. 2. Identify & apply the current multi‐axial diagnostic & classification system for psychological disorders as listed in the DSM IV‐TR 3. To understand the signs, symptoms, incidence, prevalence, risk factors, etiology, treatment & prognosis of various disorders, providing an integrative view of the course of illness. 4. To understand the major theoretical approaches to the diagnosis & treatment of abnormal behavior (i.e., psychoanalytic, humanistic, biological & cognitive). 5. Understand the implications of multicultural issues with respect to abnormal behavior and treatment methods. 6. To provide first‐hand exposure to a patient population and prevailing standards of treatment locally. GRADING Lahore University of Management Sciences
40% 4 Case Studies, Quizzes or Response Papers (Announced &/or Unannounced) 40% Final Exam 20% Final Paper: Case Study/Report Visit to the Pakistan Institute of Mental Health for case study (tentative) INSTRUCTOR POLICIES 1. Changes in the syllabus will be announced in class & through SAKAI 2. Read the required text before class. 3. Active participation: Be prepared to discuss the relevant topic. 4. Be punctual 5. Turn off cell phones. Keep them in your bag, not on your desk. 6. It is your responsibility to keep track of your grades. EXAMS 1. Some Quizzes & Response Papers are given without prior announcement, some are announced 2. NO make‐up tests are given. 3. Quizzes & Final Exam will be a combination of MCQs & short/long essay questions 4. There will no midterm exam 5. If you have to miss a test/exam inform the instructor BEFORE the test/exam... not after. ATTENDANCE 1. Regular attendance is a requirement for this class. 2. Anybody missing more than 2 classes will be removed from course. ETHICS 1. Cheating, plagiarism or any other violations of the honor code will be dealt with according to LUMS policy.
2. This class abides with school regulations that prohibit discrimination, cheating, plagiarism, harassment and substance abuse. STUDENTS ON PROBATION 1.
