is the single most widely used form of marketing for major retailers. Permission email marketing is the most highly
valued of all email marketing and it works for a variety of reasons: it allows targeting, is data driven, drives direct sales,
builds relationships, loyalty and trust, and it supports sales in other channels.Yet a survey of ICBA stores found that 70%

Incoming freshmen could be the children of Ferris Bueller. The Mindset List is an annual compilation
of the values that shape the worldview (or “mindset”) of students who are about 18 years old
and entering college, and to a lesser extent, adulthood. What started as a witty way of saying
to faculty “watch your references,” has turned into a globally reported and used guide to the intelligent, if unprepared,
adolescent consciousness. The Mindset List is requested by thousands of readers, reprinted in hundreds of publications,
and used for a variety of purposes. The Mindset List immediately caught the imagination of the public, and in the ensuing
years, has drawn responses from around the world. This site, www.beloit.edu/mindset/book, now gets more than a
million hits per year.

Disruptive Technology: Since the financial crisis began, education is the only area of the economy in
which consumer debt has continued to rise. Disruption flourishes where those who are underserved can
be better served through innovative technology. To counter skyrocketing educational costs, e-learning and
distance learning emerged to “scale the teacher,” and textbooks were sold online for a fraction of the price.
Universities and colleges need to leverage social, gaming and other technologies to remain relevant. Disruptive online,
mobile and in-store commerce tools lower the cost of education, revive campus commerce, and deliver the course
materials of today and tomorrow. Textbook Rental: The rapid growth of rental caught everyone off guard—everyone
except the new competitors whose business model is based on rental. According to OnCampus Research, in 2009,
three-hundred college stores offer textbook rentals. For fall 2011 it was estimated that 3,000 college stores would offer
rental. Rental is the most rapidly adopted business process in the history of the college store industry.

Textbooks have become a commodity product in a highly competitive market. College stores are losing
market share with our legacy business of hard copy textbooks. In terms of disciplines, courses and titles, a
relatively small group of subjects deliver a large share of the market. Competitors are aimed at that small
subject target. Digital is aimed at that small subject target. As students are migrating more and more
of their purchases to online sales, digital by its very nature is evolving to be sold online, accessed online, delivered online
and used online. Distribution of digital content is already bypassing college stores. Campus eBookstore, a centralized
marketplace where digital content can be bought and sold, delivers an industry-wide solution.
