Respiratory Syncitial Virus immunology and molecular virology
Ghent University
Abstract: The ectodomain of the short hydrophobic protein (SHe) of Respiratory Syncytial virus will be used as a recombinant virus-like particle in
prophylactic vaccination studies against this virus. The protective efficacy of SHe-specific adaptive immunity will be characterized in a mouse
model. Using passive transfer of antisera and immune cells the mechanism of protection of this novel vaccine will be determined.

Responding to the Signs of the Times: An Inquiry into the Trajectory ofFilipino Theology from Postcolonial to
Transcolonial Theories
KU Leuven
Abstract: Given the complexity of Filipino religious consciousness in the contextof the ever-constant but ever-evolving call to Christian discipleship,
we claim that, in the articulation of contemporary Filipino theology, the stress of transcolonial discourse on #non-forgetting# and #embodied
re/membrance# [the metaphor of the cross] provides a welcome alternative to the ideas of #hybridity# and #subaltern# as found in postcolonial
discourse. We unfold this thesis in mind as follows: 1) an investigation ofhow postcolonial discourse influenced Filipino theology via biblical studies,
church dogmatic teachings and local narratives; 2) an appropriation of the metaphor of the holy eucharist as an anamnesis or embodied
re/membrance in transcolonial discourse as a possible way of doing theologyin the Philippines; 3 ) a proposal to contextualize transcolonial
discourse in Filipino theology as a framework for prophetic discipleship in the Philippines where the main ecclesiological thrust is the promotion

Response Modulation in psychopathy: Attentional
Modulation of Emotional Processing.
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Abstract: Deviant emotional processing, such as impaired emotional responsiveness, is considered as a core feature of psychopathy1. Recently,
the Response Modulation Theory (RMT) stated that this deficient emotional reactivity is caused by an attentional deficit2. When attention is focused
on affective information, psychopathic individuals are able to respond adequately to emotional cues. However, they do not react adequately to
emotional stimuli outside their attentional focus2. Until now, the empirical evidence for this account is limited. Therefore, the current project aims to
investigate the specific circumstances in which emotional information fails to capture the attention. First, we will consolidate and extend the RMT
predictions using an adapted picture-viewing and priming paradigm, adjusted to allow us to manipulate both the direction of attention and the
emotional valence of the information. Second, we aim to identify the exact influence of reward and punishment on attentional and emotional
processing. Third, we examine whether the nature of the emotional stimuli (e.g. threat to self or other) is crucial in the relation between attentional
focus and emotional reactivity. In our project we use a multi-method approach, by recording behavioral and psychophysiological responses to
measure emotional processing. In this way, we will contribute to important theoretical and clinical issues concerning emotional processing in
incarcerated and non-incarcerated psychopathic individuals.

Response of biodiversity law in the context of climate change: a comparative study of China and EU
Ghent University
Abstract: In both China and EU biodiversity is under serious threat. Both jurisdictions have passed laws and regulations and developed legal
mechanisms for biodiversity conservation. However, biodiversity regimes in China and EU did not take into account the effects of climate change
and are likely to fall short to adequately facilitate adaptation of species and ecosystems to climate change. This comparative legal research will
focus on new developments to realize synergies between biodiversity conservation and climate change control in China and in the EU.

Response of deep-sea biota to rapid global warming during the early Paleocene
KU Leuven
Abstract: Rapid climate change during the Paleocene/Eocene thermal maximum (PETM)at 56 million years ago coincided with dramatic global
changes amongst marine and terrestrial biota. The PETM, however, was not an entirely single and unique event, but it was part of a series of less
severe transient global warming (hyperthermal) events, including the Latest Danian event (LDE). The LDE was first discovered by means of benthic
foraminifera, unicellular organisms living on the seafloor, studies in Egypt and recently linked to deep-sea warming. In this project, the
micropaleontologic record of climate change in the deep sea will be investigated by means of high-resolution quantitative benthic foraminiferal and
stable isotope records. Stable isotopes are different forms of the same element that give information on the environment in the past. For instance, in
colder ocean waters, more heavy calcium isotopes are incorporated into the calcite shell. The goals are to unravel systematic responses to
environm

Response of fluvial processes and sediment dynamics to human impact and global change (Visiting scholar P. Billi,
University of Ferrara)
Ghent University
Abstract: Natural rivers geomorphology and dynamics result from the interaction of two main factors: flow regime, controlled mainly by climatic
factors, and sediment supply, controlled mainly by catchment physical properties and land use/cover. This project aims to study the river response
in terms of sediment transport and channel morphology adjustments to human impact and desertification in both industrialised and developing
countries.
