PT 251 Outcomes
Outcome #1 Demonstrate correct palpation of bony and muscular components of the thorax and
rib cage.
Objectives
The student will be able to:

Identify the bony structures of the thorax, scapula, vertebrae, sternum and rib cage.

Palpate the bony landmarks of the thorax, scapula, vertebrae, sternum and rib cage.

Identify the muscle of respiration.

Palpate the palpable muscles of respiration.
Outcome #2 Demonstrate correct palpation of all major pulse sites of primary arteries.
Objectives
The student will be able to:

Identify the major arteries that are capable of being palpated.

Palpate the carotid, brachial, radial, ulnar, femoral, popliteal, dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial
pulses.
Outcome #3 Demonstrate proper auscultation of the heart and lungs.
Objectives
The student will be able to:

Identify the ideal places for auscultation of the heart and lungs.

Place the chest peace of the stethoscope in the appropriate places for assessing heart and lung
function.
Outcome #4 Demonstrate consistent blood pressure and oxygen reading on individuals at rest,
during exercise and post exercise.
Objectives
The student will be able to:

Identify and obtain the equipment for determining blood pressure

Identify and obtain the equipment for measuring blood oxygen content.

Place the sphygmomanometer in the proper place on the upper arm and/or thigh.

Demonstrate proper technique in obtaining and recording blood pressure.

Place the pulse oximeter on the index or middle finger

Obtain and record the oxygen level.
Outcome #5 Demonstrate postural drainage techniques.
Objectives
The student will be able to:

Demonstrate the correct use of the tilt table.

Demonstrate the correct placement of a patient on the tilt table.

Demonstrate correct percussion technique on a treatment table.

Place the patient in the appropriate positions for percussive and gravity assisted lung drainage.

Demonstrate the percussion technique on a properly placed patient.
Outcome #6 Describe the effect of aerobic and anaerobic exercise on well and diseased
populations.
Objectives
The student will be able to:

Describe the physiological characteristics of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism.

Instruct and perform various types of exercises that could be used to enhance aerobic function.

Instruct and perform various types of exercises that could be used to enhance anaerobic function.

State how specific diseases of various systems could affect an individual's capacity to complete
specific aerobic and/or anaerobic exercises.
Outcome #7 Use the assessment techniques to measure cardiovascular and pulmonary endurance.
Objectives
The student will be able to:

Identify some of the equipment that can be used in an aerobic exercise program that will also
measure cardiovascular and pulmonary function and endurance.

Demonstrate the use of a treadmill, upper extremity ergometer, elliptical trainer and ambulation

Demonstrate the techniques of obtaining and recording blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration rate,
percent oxygen content and perceived exertion scales while the patient is participating in selected
exercises.
