The Differences between Aerobic and Anaerobic Exercise
Aerobic means with oxygen or with air. Anaerobic means the exact opposite--without oxygen or air. When you think of
aerobic exercise, activities such as walking briskly, jogging and aerobic dancing come to mind. When one engages in these
exercises, the body requires oxygen or air to sustain the activity. Aerobic exercise is performed longer, but the pace is
lower in intensity. It benefits the heart, burns calories and helps with overall body toning.
Anaerobic exercise is done without air or oxygen. The idea behind anaerobic exercise is to work extremely hard using little
or no oxygen. An example of anaerobic exercise is lifting heavy weights using short bursts of energy. Interval training
where different types of strenuous exercises are done in short bursts is another example of anaerobic exercise. Without
oxygen during the workout muscles become fatigued and lactic acid, a by-product of anaerobic exercise is produced.
Repeated anaerobic exercise increases the body's ability to handle fatigue and to respond better to lactic acid build up.
Both aerobic and anaerobic exercises have their places in a workout routine. Aerobic exercise is better for burning calories
and overall toning. Anaerobic exercise helps build bigger and stronger muscles while training the body to work hard with
little oxygen. It also increases the body's ability to handle the fatigue that comes with extremely intense workouts.
