Hypoestes
Polka Dot Plant, Pink Splash
A very popular, easily grown plant, with several color variations. Most commonly
seen in shades of bright pink and green, it is also available in red/green and white/
green combinations. The plant grows rapidly under good lighting conditions and
with ample water. Sometimes seen in hanging baskets or used outdoors in summer
as a ground cover or an accent plant in containers. When mature, the plant flowers
small white or light purple flowers which should be removed to encourage compact
and attractive foliage growth. Because of its thin and somewhat delicate leaves, it is
important to make certain the plant doesn’t dry out thoroughly. If wilted, it should recover with a good soaking, but
dry and curled leaf tips will develop if the plant is routinely underwatered. Prune regularly to keep compact and full.
Light:
Prefers bright light with some sun. More direct sunlight will produce brighter
more colorful foliage. If light is too low, plant will become mostly green and
stretch out, becoming taller with smaller leaves.
Low- well away from a bright
window, or close to an
obstructed window. Indirect
light, north facing windows.
Water:
Medium- bright but sunless,
some distance from a sunny
window or close to a bright
sunless window.
Partial Sun– east or west
facing windows, at least
four hours of direct
sunlight per day.
Full Sun– south facing
window. Full exposure,
continuous sun, may be
hot in summer.
Keep somewhat moist at all times, reducing water a bit in winter months.
Never allow the plant to dry completely. Be attentive to watering if plant
is growing in a sunny window or outside in a pot.
Allow soil to dry thoroughly
between waterings.
Water when soil has dried one to
two inches below the surface.
Water when soil has just
dried on the surface.
