Gardenia
Fact Sheet
Common name: Gardenia
Family: Rubiaceae
Genus: Gardenia
Gardenias are native to China and are a great choice if
you want to add fragrance to your garden. Some are
suitable for pots, otherwise place in a special spot in the
garden where the perfume can be enjoyed.
Popular Varieties:
Radicans
A small shrub to 30cm high with
small flowers
Florida
A medium shrub to 1.2m high with
a prolific display of medium
sized flowers
Magnifica
A medium-large shrub to 2m high
with large flowers
Habit:
A small to medium-large evergreen shrub, depending
on variety.
Flower/Fruit:
Highly perfumed flowers available in white or yellow
(Gold Magic variety). Single, semi-double and double
layered petal forms are available. Flowers are produced
late spring and early summer, with spot flowering
throughout the warmer months of the year.
Position:
Prefer full sun to part shade and need to be
protected from frosts.
Soil Type:
Rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, improved with
compost and water crystals. For pots use Debco Pot
Power or Terracotta and Tub potting mixes.
Ensure you mulch well to prevent the roots from
drying out.
Fertilising:
Apply a seaweed solution like Seasol monthly and
fertilise with Harry’s Gardenia Food to encourage
strong healthy growth and the production of
many flowers.
Watering:
Regular deep watering throughout the warmer months
(usually about twice a week but it depends on
the weather).
Pests and Diseases:
Gardenias are prone to scales that can lead to sooty
mould if left untreated.
Scale
Usually identified by brown or black
bumps on the leaves and/or stems, these
can be controlled with Pest Oil or
Eco Oil.
Sooty Mould
A black coating on the leaves, this will
flake off over time once the scale is
treated.
Other Care:
Prune after flowering.
Did you know:
The delicate flowers bruise easily when touched, so if
picking for a vase take care not to touch them.
