Unit 14 The Mystery of the White Gardenia Gardenia • Gardenia is a genus of 142 species of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Asia, Australasia and Oceania. • The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus after Dr. Alexander Garden (1730-1791), a Scottish-born American naturalist. • They are evergreen shrubs and small trees growing to 1–15 metres (3.3–49 ft) tall. The leaves are opposite or in whorls of three or four, 5–50 centimetres (2.0–20 in) long and 3–25 centimetres (1.2–9.8 in) broad, dark green and glossy with a leathery texture. The flowers are solitary or in small clusters, white, or pale yellow, with a tubularbased corolla with 5-12 lobes (petals) from 5–12 centimetres (2.0– 4.7 in) diameter. Flowering is from about mid-spring to mid-summer and many species are strongly scented. Marsha Arons • Mrs. Arons has developed a mathematical formula for a perfect literary analysis. For starters, there are five basic rules that are inviolable for literary analyses: 1. You cannot say anything about literature. Any comment about literature must be supported by textual evidence. You must use hard and fast evidence that you find in the text to prove your point and cannot just "feel" or "sense" something about what the author is trying to convey. 2. Literary analysis is always written in third person, present tense. No exceptions. The reason that literature is always written about in the present tense is that he work continues to exist and the characters continue to go through the same actions long after you have finished reading. 3. Literature appeals to human beings because it always deals with some element of the human condition. You must identify which element you will examine in your paper. Your paper must examine something and not just contain observations. 4. You must prove your thesis in the body of the essay. 5. There can be no fewer than five sentences in a paragraph. • Marsha Arons is also a contributer to Series. She has authored over 50 stories in the series and has been featured on the cover seven times. In addition, she is the author of Teen Miracles, a collection of inspirational stories for teens and a part of the Samll Miracles series of books , and also contain articles written by her. • She resides in Skokie, Illinois and has a family, which includes a loving husband, and four daughters ranging from sixteen to twenty eight. She is an affectionate grandmother.
