Chapter 3 Section 1 B Essential Questions: “How and why is Earth constantly changing?” Intro Question: "How do we know the Earth's composition?" Terms of Use: Tectonic Plates, Divergent Boundaries, Convergent Boundaries, Seafloor Spreading, Subduction, Convection New Standard (Don’t Copy) • Evidence from deep probes and seismic waves, reconstructions of historical changes in Earth’s surface and its magnetic field, and an understanding of physical and chemical processes lead to a model of Earth with a hot but solid inner core, a liquid outer core, a solid mantle and crust. Motions of the mantle and its plates occur primarily through thermal convection, which involves the cycling of matter due to the outward flow of energy from Earth’s interior and gravitational movement of denser materials toward the interior. Primary Investigation Write the questions and answer in a complete sentence 1. How do the plates move in a convergent boundary? 2. How do the plates move in a divergent boundary? 3. What do these movements tell you about the Earth’s composition? Movement of Earth’s Crust over 140 million years. Drawing and Labels • Draw the figures below to best of your ability. Label using the Terms. Use the handout to help you. Terms of Use: Tectonic Plates, Divergent Boundaries, Convergent Boundaries, Seafloor Spreading, Subduction, Convection C. A. How does earthquake data give scientist more clues about tectonic plates? Rubric Category/ Score Exit Slip 4 3 2 1 All “terms of use” used correctly in answer. Used evidence to clearly justify answer with examples. Most “terms of use” used correctly in answer. Used evidence to justify answer. Some “terms of use” used correctly in answer. Used some evidence to justify answer. Few of the “terms of use” used correctly in answer. Used some evidence to attempt to justify answer.
