Brain Pop : Plate Tectonics 1. What do Africa and South America look like? Africa and South America look like pieces of a puzzle that could fit together. 2. Why is it significant that they look like that? The significance in the puzzle-like fit is that it supports the theory that all of the continents were once one big continent called Pangea. 3. The outer layer of the earth or crust is broken up into about a dozen major and many minor tectonic plates. 4. Tectonic Plates float around on a layer of molten rock called the outer mantle. 5. What is continental drift? When the plates move , the continents shift along with them. ADD: The support for this comes in the form of fossils of the same kind of prehistoric animals that were found on the northeast coast of South America and the southwest coast of Africa. 6. What are results of movement along plate boundaries? Volcanoes Earthquakes Mountains Trenches ADD 7. What are divergent boundaries? Explain and draw a picture. Divergent boundaries are where plates are moving apart from one another and new crust forms. 8. What are convergent boundaries? Explain and draw a picture. Convergent boundaries are where plates are moving towards one another and one may subduct or they both push up and form a mountain. 9. What are transform boundaries? Explain and draw a picture. Transform boundaries are where plates slide horizontally past each other causing friction and often result in earthquakes. 10. What is created by liquid rock pushing up from the mantle? New crust forms where magma pushes up into the gap that is formed along divergent plate boundaries.
