Essential Questions:
1. How did the rise of commercial trade change the social and political order of the 15th and 16th century?
2. What aspects of the Renaissance were a “rebirth” and how much was it a continuation of the cultural
traditions of the past?
3. How did the idea of Renaissance humanism change the perspectives of European intellectuals?
4. Why did some nations move towards national monarchies & unification while others descended into further
political fragmentation?
Objectives: (Students will be able to...)
1. Identify the origins of the word Renaissance and be able to explain its historical meaning.
2. Describe the influences and causes of the Renaissance, especially of the Greeks and Romans.
3. Explain how economics, banking, and trade are tied to the rebirth of European culture.
4. Discuss the major themes of Machiavelli’s The Prince and apply these themes to the modern era.
5. Identify key features of art and literature in the Renaissance including differences between the Northern and
Italian Renaissances.
6. Explain the place of religion and the Catholic Church in the Renaissance.
7. Describe the societal changes in Europe due to the Renaissance.
8. Describe the intellectual changes in European thought due to the Renaissance.
9. Discuss the impacts of the Renaissance on the development of science and technology.
10. Explain the growth of the European states during the Renaissance with especial focus on England, Italy, and
Spain.
11. Describe the role and impact of warfare in the Renaissance.
