Name:________________________ Date:_____________Hour:______ Cell Specialization Lab Introduction The human body, like the body of any animal or plant, is made up of many millions of individual cells. But these cells are not scattered through the body in disorder or confusion. The body is a well-organized community of cooperating cells. Cells adapt themselves and develop into a remarkable variety of different forms and sizes. Similar cells group together to perform similar work. The work these cells do is called a special function of the cells, and the group of cells itself is called a tissue. In turn, tissues group together to perform a special function. Such groups of tissues are called organs of the body. Directions In this lab each student will be observing and reading about different types of tissues found in multi-cellular organisms. For each station, please read the information given on the card. Then, please draw what each tissue looks like. Last, answer the questions about that tissue in the space provided. Each student must stay at his/her station until it is time to rotate. Station 1 – Voluntary Muscle Cells Magnification = ________ 1. Why are these muscles called voluntary muscles? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2. What gives the muscles a striped appearance? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 3. What is the function of voluntary muscle cells? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ Station 2 – Involuntary (Smooth) Muscle Cells Magnification = ________ 1. Why are these muscles called involuntary muscles? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2. What is another name for this type of muscle? Why? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 3. Where is this type of tissue found in the body? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ Name:________________________ Date:_____________Hour:______ Station 3 – Heart Muscle Magnification = ________ 1. What is the function of heart muscle? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ Station 4 – Areolar Connective Tissue Magnification = ________ 1. Why must connective tissue not be too hard? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2. What are the dark blue ovals you see? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 3. What is the function of connective tissue? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ Station 5 – Bone Tissue Magnification = ________ 1. What are the parts labeled A? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2. How is a blood smear slide made? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2. Where are blood cells made? _____________________________________________ 3. What does a red blood cell not have that other cells do have? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 4. What is the function of red blood cells? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 5. What is the function of white blood cells? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ Station 7 – Adipose Tissue Magnification = ________ 1. What is the common name for adipose tissue? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2. What happened to the nucleuses of these cells? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 3. What is the function of adipose tissue? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ Station 8 – Spinal Cord Magnification = ________ 1. What types of cells are shown in this slide? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ 2.
