TOTAL SCORE ____________/20 CONCLUSION SCORE (conclusion rubric) ____________/20 Corrected by: _____________________ Histology Lab Purpose: To review the characteristics of epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous tissues and to observe examples. Objectives: 1. Describe the characteristics and types of epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous tissues 2. Indicate a location and function of each type of tissue 3. Identify examples of epithelial, connective, muscle and nervous tissues Materials: Textbook or notes Microscope Prepared slides of tissues Colored pencils Procedure: 1. Use the microscope to observe the prepared slides of the different types of tissues. a. Look for its special distinguishing features: such as cell size, shape and arrangement. b. Compare the prepared slides to the pictures in the text and/or your notes. 2. Sketch a FEW of the cells of each type of tissue in part B of the lab report. For each sketch, indicate magnification, and include a location example and the function of the tissue. 3. LABEL THE MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OR STRUCTURES THAT YOU USED TO IDENTIFY THIS TISSUE. 4. Use colored pencils to differentiate various cellular structures in your sketches. Select a different color for each of the structures on the color key and color those structures as seen in each of your sketches. 5. Test your ability to recognize each type of tissue. To do this, have your lab partner select one of the slides, cover its label and focus the microscope on the tissue. See if you can correctly identify the tissue. Saugus High School Lab Conclusion Write the following conclusion following the Science Writing Guidelines. Use complex sentences in all sections. 1. Introductory statement with the purpose or the problem and hypothesis. 2. Summary of experiment with results. (This is slightly different from the standard conclusion for this lab). Describe the four tissue categories present in the body and the characteristics that are common with that tissue. Using ONE example from EACH tissue type, explain how the cells and components of the tissue exemplify the characteristics of that particular tissue type. EPITHELIUM CONNECTIVE MUSCLE NERVOUS 3. Describe any real or possible error. If you had real error, explain why this error occurred. If no error occurred, explain why another group had error or theorize where error could occur. Be specific and do not describe a math error--instead re-do the math. 4. Paraphrase and cite the textbook or other reference material (using MLA format) and explain whether the results of this lab confirm or refute the scientific concepts in the material. 5. Provide a concluding statement that is evidence-based (facts and data). Remember, no opinions or feelings. 6. Works Cited Science Lab Conclusion Rubric 4 3 1. Introductory Statement 2. Summary All tissues are thoroughly described and tissue example clearly demonstrates how structure of cells and intercellular matrix allows specialized function of the tissue. All tissues are described with some degree of thoroughness. Most tissue examples clearly demonstrate how structure of cells and intercellular matrix allows specialized function of the tissue. 3. Error 4. Textbook or Other Material Reference Accurate reference with all required information. Clear explanation of confirmation or rebuttal of scientific information in reference material. Accurate reference, but explanation of reference material is somewhat unclear, too short or slightly flawed. 5. Concluding Statement 6. Writing Guidelines 7. ContentSpecific Scientific Vocabulary 8.
