INTRODUCTION
Social sciences are born and mature just like biological objects. Therefore sociology was born
and it has matured, and as it matures, it has developed its own theories.
In fact theories are considered as the ”building blocks” that we use to develop any science. Sociology
has already attained its maturity stage i.e. it has already developed its own social theories that it uses to
explain social behaviour.
In sociology we use theories to explain how social realities unfold and therefore to understand them.
To be more specific sociologists use social theories to explain social phenomena such as alcoholism,
street children, crime, suicide, inequality, poverty, prostitution, corruption, etc.
Therefore, if you wish to become a sociologist, then it is incumbent upon you to become conversant
with or have sufficient knowledge of social theories.
