Roman Architecture
The Roman architecture was based on the ideologies by the earliest architects from the
ancient Greek. By following the architectural guidelines adopted by the Greeks, the Romans
were able to blend the new and the existing techniques to create better architectural forms.
Structural innovations and inventions are among the great accomplishments achieved by the
Ancient Rome. Roman architecture was unique from the earlier tradition as a result of new
discoveries and inventions by the Romans.
Development of architectural forms was largely contributed to by the Romans, whose
innovations and inventions led to new hybrid forms. The architectural forms introduced by the
Romans included the Roman concrete, the arch, and the dome. The Romans developed concrete
from lime mortar after realizing its possibility in supporting massive weights. Thus, they adopted
concrete in building their structures including aqueducts, monuments, and bridges. Concrete
made from pozzolana, volcanic rocks, and sand, became widely used in constructing harbors,
baths and piers. The arch was a stone built curved structure developed by the Romans was meant
for supporting or strengthening buildings. The arch designed by the Romans differed from the
previous arches in that it was made from concrete and could support heavier weights.

The architectural achievement from the ancient Rome that became most important to the
later architecture was the invention of concrete. The majority of the structure built suing the
Roman concrete have lasted for over two thousand years, proving how superior it was. Since its
adoption in construction, concrete led to the creation of many masterpieces taking architecture to
different levels. Road systems, columns, domes, and arches were later created from concrete,
further proving it to be the most remarkable achievement.
