By following the architectural guidelines adopted by the Greeks, the Romans were able to blend the new and the existing techniques to create better architectural forms. Structural innovations and inventions are among the great accomplishments achieved by the Ancient Rome. Roman architecture was unique from the earlier tradition as a result of new discoveries and inventions by the Romans. Development of architectural forms was largely contributed to by the Romans, whose innovations and inventions led to new hybrid forms. The architectural forms introduced by the Romans included the Roman concrete, the arch, and the dome. The Romans developed concrete from lime mortar after realizing its possibility in supporting massive weights. Thus, they adopted concrete in building their structures including aqueducts, monuments, and bridges. Concrete made from pozzolana, volcanic rocks, and sand, became widely used in constructing harbors, baths and piers. The arch was a stone built curved structure developed by the Romans was meant for supporting or strengthening buildings. The arch designed by the Romans differed from the previous arches in that it was made from concrete and could support heavier weights.
