Function
The Endocrine system is in charge of cell growth, or body
processes that happen slowly.
It regulates mood, growth and development, tissue function,
metabolism, and reproductive processes.
It is made up of the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, adrenals,
parathyroids, pineal body, and the pancreas.
Glands of the Endocrine System
Hypothalamus
The hypothalamus is main link
between the endocrine and
nervous system
Controls homeostasis-the
process of keeping the
body’s status leveled.
Receives inputs from the body
then makes changes if
hormones are unbalanced
within body.
Pituitary
Pituitary located base of the brain
beneath hypothalamus ,
considered most important
part of the endocrine system
Makes hormones that control
several other endocrine glands
,two parts anterior and
posterior
Secretes various hormones that
get sent to other glands & turn
to other hormones.
Thyroid
Located in the front part of the
lower neck, it is shaped like a
butterfly or bow tie
It produces hormones
(Thyroxine) that regulate
metabolic rate, heart rate,
digestive function, muscle
control, bone maintenance
and brain development.
Also produces calcitonin , it
regulates calcium.
Adrenals
The body has one Adrenal gland
on top of each kidney
The outer part ,adrenal cortex,
produces hormones that
regulate salt & water
balance in body
The inner part or the adrenal
medulla produces
catecholamines, such as
adrenaline which increases
Parathyroids
Parathyroids are smaller than
the pea size gland it is
parathyroids is located in the
neck behind the thyroid
gland.
have four parathyroid glands
parathyroids hormones it’s job
is to control calcium levels,
and ensures nervous and
body’s muscles are working
properly.
Pineal Gland
Located deep in brain where
the epithalamus is.
Pineal only acts at night or
dark.
It secretes melatonin, it’s
main hormone , releases it
into bloodstream and also
into brain fluid.
Melatonin is a hormone that
Pancreas
The pancreas produces
two important
hormones, insulin &
glucagon
They maintain a steady
level of glucose in the
blood
They also keep the body
supplied with fuel
Collaboration with Other Systems
The Endocrine System
usually works with the
nervous system
The Endocrine System
secretes hormones into
your blood & produces
other chemicals that
relate with other systems
Reproductive hormones
affect the nervous system
Diseases and Disorders
There are many diseases that affect the endocrine system.
Addison’s Disease is a disease ,the adrenal glands don't produce
enough cortisol hormones because the immune system attacks it
and metabolism is at risk. ( cortisol hormones control blood
sugar)
The result or symptoms are weakness, fatigue, abdominal pain,
nausea, weight loss, low blood pressure, darkened skin, salt
craves, and depression.
However taking pills will reduce symptoms but no gland can be
removed.
