Topic 8: Rocks and Minerals
Use Topic11 Earth’s Materials-Minerals, Rocks and Natural Resources pg.219
The assignments must be handed in by the due date. You may hand the assignments in early if
you complete them ahead of time.
Chapter Objectives:
1. Explain how physical properties of minerals are determined by their chemical
compositions and crystal structures.
2. Describe how minerals can be identified by well-defined physical and chemical
properties, such as cleavage, fracture, color, specific gravity, hardness, streak, luster,
crystal shape, and reaction with acid.
3. Explain that chemical composition and physical properties determine how minerals use
minerals.
4. Describe how minerals are formed inorganically by the process of crystallization as a
result of specific environmental conditions. These include:
a. Cooling and solidification of magma
b. Precipitation from water caused by such processes as evaporation, chemical
reactions, and temperature changes
c. Rearrangement of atoms in existing minerals subjected to conditions of high
temperature and pressure
5. Explain that rocks are usually composed of one or more minerals.
6. Describe how rocks are classified by their origins, mineral contents, and textures.
7. Explain how the characteristics of rocks indicate the process by which they formed and
the environments in which these processes took place.
8. Describe how the properties of rocks determine their uses and also influence land usage
by humans.
1) Homework Assignments: You may work with you group to complete the assignments
but you each must each hand the assignments.

Homework choices:
 Create a crossword including the content from the chapter. Make sure to include an
answer key. Your crossword must include at least 20 words.
 Create your own worksheet using the content from the chapter.
 Assignment of your choosing with my prior approval.
 Design and create a study game for the chapter.
 Informational Brochure
2) Labs: You must complete the following labs. You may work with a partner but you
must each complete the lab and lab report.

4) Portfolio presentation: You can work as a group but you each must submit your own
portfolio.

Create a portfolio that both answers the objectives and demonstrates that you learned the
objectives.
Your grade for the portfolio will be based on the following:
Number of objectives in portfolio
Description/Explanation/Demonstration of Objective
Images/Diagrams/Tables
Proof of how you learned the objective
Presentation/Neatness
Citations when needed
Your portfolio can be completed by using a computer program that you like, by using poster
board, or by using a combination of both. Another GOOD option is to use Google sites to
create the portfolio.
5) Lab, Quiz, Research Paper: You may complete these assignments individually or in
pairs. If completed in pairs, only 1 finished product needs to be turned in. You must
pick 2 different assignments.
Assignment Choices
Quiz 3 (If you choose to take
the quiz you must create a
study guide to hand in prior to
taking the quiz. If taken in a
pair you and your partner must
justify your answer)
Create your own lab
experiment
Research Paper related to the
chapter
Create a quiz/test. (If
individually then quiz. If in a
pair, then test)
Create a website that can be
used to teach the content to
others. Including
explanations, images and
videos.
Become the teacher. Plan a
lesson. It must include a
detailed lesson plan, a short
quiz with multiple question
types. You must grade the

quiz and provide feedback to
your students.
6) Summative Assessment: The chapter test must be completed individually
