Graduate Assistant Spring 2011 Office of Student Media University Life creates purposeful learning environments, experiences, and opportunities that energize all students to broaden their capacity for academic success and personal growth. Through our innovative programs, partnerships, and services, students discover their unique talents, passions, and place in the world. The Office of Student Media oversees the student-run media groups, brings together academic and co-curricular learning, helps serve the communication needs of the campus community and promotes the value of a free press on a college campus. Through innovative programs, publications and training, students gain practical experience in media-related skills and develop an appreciation for the value and the importance of civic engagement, leadership responsibilities, and the First Amendment and free speech. GOAL OF THE GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP: Consistent with the vision of Student Media, the graduate assistant will have the opportunity to experience reciprocity between theory and practice in the areas of advertising and marketing. With the move to The Hub (formerly known as SUBII), the Office of Student Media will be transitioning to a convergence model of media, including advertising and marketing of student media publications. Spring Semester 2011 is the perfect timeframe to have a GA work on the first steps in making this exciting transition to a convergence advertising team, Student Media Advertising, slated to be in full production by Fall Semester 2011. ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THE GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP: Demonstrate an ability to work well with others Be comfortable working autonomously Have strong communication skills Ability to research and write summaries on topics related to college media advertising and marketing strategies, including convergence models Basic skills in website development and online assessment Completed coursework or have experience in advertising and marketing theory Experience and/or interest in learning how to serve as adviser for student staff GRADUATE ASSISTANSHIP MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Works with individual student media groups on short-term advertising goals Researches local, peer and award-winning student media (print, online, radio, cable, magazines, and literary journals) publications’ advertising rates, promotional campaigns, distribution and marketing strategies Interviews new media and online ad directors about ad strategies Works with Student Media Director, staff and consultants on advertising strategies Submits a final report and presentation for student media staff that includes: o Best practices used by other college media publications, including media kits (rare cards), ad combos, marketing, and distribution strategies o Summary of convergence models researched and advertising strategies used o Suggested ways to generate revenue using new advertising strategies, including social media TO APPLY: To apply for this position, please submit a letter of interest, resume, and three professional references to: Kathryn Mangus Director of the Office of Student Media [email protected] 993-3004
