Activity 8: role plays
Role play is an important part of the History classroom as it gives students the chance to empathise with
others, to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and feel what it was like to live as they did.
Choose the key group you are interested in depicting in your role play first and then do some
research on that particular group.
For example, if you choose the shi you may want to find out more about concubines. You may be
interested to know that on occasion, concubines were buried alive with their masters to keep them
company in the afterlife.
In your role play you MUST cover:
 Clearly show the roles and responsibilities of one or more of the key groups in Chinese society
 Where you live in China and why you live there
 Your belief, and how that impacts on your everyday life (don’t need to say what you belief is, but
the audience should be able to determine the belief by the decorations, rules you use)
 A problem (attack on the village, a death, peasant stealing a bag of rice etc.) and how this
impacts you, your family, village.
 Use the correct pronunciation of all words
Additionally your role play needs to:
 Tell a story
 Remain factual – all information/notes must be referenced
 Not make fun of or laugh during your performance
 Include the use of props and costumes (as factual as possible)
Write the script
You will have to write a script clearly working out what each character will say and do.
Prepare a backdrop
Think about the backdrop for your role play. You could blow up a relevant image from Google images to
have in the background or project an image onto the whiteboard or use props to create a setting. Think
of physical prompts such as some cherry blossom or material in gold to be draped at the back of the
stage. Consider relevant music to give the audience a more realistic experience – even incense!
Create costumes
Research factual images of how your individual was dressed and make some simple costumes. Or even
just a hat or a fan.
Rehearse
Make sure you rehearse how you are going to present your role play to iron out any problems and ensure
all actors know their roles or lines and understand when they are to speak.

Problem faced – what is the problem, who does it involved, emotions etc?

Once you have completed the planning sheet on the computer, you will need to print out 2 copies and place in
your history folder for marking.
Marking Criteria
A
Information – factual
Understanding and knowledge of your chosen role(s)
Organisation – completed all planning, and ready on time for
presentation
Research – detailed and referenced
Oral presentation (voice projection, remembering of lines, eye
contact, body language, emotional speech)
Creativity – props and costumes
Problem faced was relevant, interesting and realistic
Addressed all components of the task
Cooperation – both do 50% of the task
