Ethical Behavior and Personal Dignity
Ethics is the moral that every profession must have. Each profession has its ethics that are
distinct from another profession's ethics. Just as morals are to a community so are ethics to a
profession. Some acts may not be ethical but are lawful while some may be unlawful yet they are
moral. Therefore, to define an ethical behavior, one must first understand what ethics is. Ethical
behavior is acting in ways that are consistent with not only a community but also more so to the
desires of a profession (Burrow 201). Ethical behavior tends to be good for a profession and
business, and it involves showing respect to fundamental moral principles, which include
honesty, dignity, equality, fairness, individual rights, as well as diversity.
Personal dignity on the other hand also referred to as human dignity means that a person
has a feeling of self-respect and self-worth. Personal dignity is concerned with the psychological
as well as the physical empowerment and integrity of an individual. Most of the times personal
dignity are tainted or harmed by the unfair treatment premised on individual behavior or the
circumstances that unrelated to a person’s needs, merits, and capacities (Mineau 128). Dignity
accords an individual a sense of value and worth to themselves. In care, dignity meant the type of
attention in any setting or environment that supports but never undermines the self-respect of an
individual despite the kind of difference.
Ethical behavior and personal dignity both work alongside one another. Ethical behavior
involves an individual having personal dignity. On the other hand, an individual who practices

ethical behavior mostly shows personal dignity. Therefore, that means that the two influence one
another in a way or another as defined above. Their profession contributes to an individuals’
ethical behaviorlargely because ethics and morals are distinct in the nature defined above.
Different individuals will have different ethics because of their different professions (Kirchhoffer
51). The two have their advantages and disadvantages as discussed below.
1.
Benefits of Upholding Positive Standard for Ethical Behavior and Personal Dignity
a)
To Self
To an individual, it is best for them to hold these standards for many reasons. An
individual can build his or her career when they uphold ethical behavior and standards. That is
because ethics are the morals of a profession. Upholding ethical behavior by an individual
enhances their professional growth because it forms the basis upon which they can build their
professional growth. Failure to uphold these standards can lead to one losing his or her hardearned job. The ethical background of an individual determines the recommendations they get
from other members of the society. That is because each professional has a name to defend so is
the profession. No one would like to be involved in a profession that does not have good ethics
and morals.
Personal dignity, on the other hand, is essential to an individual because it is what backs
the ethical behavior. An individual can learn ethics from their profession or other individual
while personal dignity starts with an individual right at birth and are an outcome of the
environment around an individual. An individual will have a good reputation both in their
profession and in their social life when he upholds these standards (Luban 87). That reputation
will be to his or her advantage in the society as well as in the profession, and the individual may
make a good leader.

b)
To the University
The university in which I am training will also have a sense of pride when I uphold
ethical practice and standards. This is more so when I go for an internship to any organization
and uphold the standards. Other students who may come from the institution in the future will be
highly recommended and that will be to the advantage of the university. When I uphold these
standards for my own profession and reputation, it will also have a greater impact to the
institution and the reputation to the university. Many people will also want to associate with such
a university. Students will always want to join such a university and parents will always want to
send their children to such an institution. Employers will always prefer to get employees who
have received training from such an institution. Therefore when I uphold these standards does
not only benefit me as an individual but the university as well. This creates a name for the
university and helps market it.
c)
To the Future Employer
Employers will always want employees who have a good reputation. Achievement of a
good reputation on the part of a professional involves upholding their ethical standards in their
career. When a professional upholds these standards, employers tend to get the best satisfaction
from its customers and investors. The employer will have less time handling ethical issues. It is
also advantageous because this saves the company on irrelevant costs and expenses in handling
unethical behavior. It is also of advantage to the employer when the employee upholds the
standards because they will get the best result from the employee. The employer will also benefit
from increased number of referrals from clients because of the good reputation the employer gets
from the employees traits.
d)
To My Profession
Surname 4
Every professional is always interested in growing in his or her profession. Therefore,
one will always try hard to uphold ethical standards and personal dignity. For one to grow his
career as an individual he has to uphold the ethical standards of their practice. When one upholds
these standards, he or she is growing the profession. That is an advantage to the profession when
one upholds the ethical standards while dispensing his duties or services.
2.
Disadvantages of Upholding These Standards
Some of these standards might be ethical, but they can be unlawful depending on the
profession. One may end up in jail because of upholding some of these standards. That is
because most of the professionals are much more conversant with ethical behavior than they are
with unlawful behavior. Upholding some ethical behaviors that are unlawful is because of the
desire of the professional to maintain his or her career and forget about the law. Most people are
busy and blinded by their career that they may even not beware of the law hence ending up on
the wrong side of the law.
Ethical practices are also a disadvantage because it sometimes goes against the wish of an
individual. People come from different social and religious backgrounds. Not all the ethical
behaviors of professions are flexible because they are universal and may not change to
accommodate some few individuals. Some professionals are forced to go against their norms and
traditions socially because they have to uphold their profession's ethical standards and practices.
It would only be fair if they all accommodated all the religious and social backgrounds.
Consequently, these standards are a disadvantage to some of the employees as they
sometimes keep on doing what is against their religion or culture. Some people may fail to take
up careers of their choice, as they will have to compromise their religion and personal beliefs to

accommodate career choices. That is because some professions are against some individuals
beliefs.
