Sell and Spin: A History of Advertising
_______________________________________
GROUP MEMBERS:
Where does the word “advertising” originate from?
How many ads do we see a day?
How well recognized are the words “Coca-Cola?”
What’s the most successful advertising icon in history and how did it come
about?
How did soap become something used daily in the US? Who was the target
market? What other “diseases” did advertising/corporations create?
How did the term “brand” come into use?
Many of the concepts of advertising are things we take for granted. Yet, they
each have a developmental history. How did early newspaper advertisements
work?
How did the advertising agency come to be?
What was the significance of Ladies’ Home Journal?
How did advertisers influence society and the networks? Do you think this still
continues?
How did a more sophisticated audience affect advertising?
Often researchers are concerned with facts – or at least they appear to be.
Advertising does that to some degree, but how was that altered in 1932?
What are two developments in advertising that are more recent than those
depicted in the film?
Is advertising really useful? Can you think of a successful company that does not
advertise (or only minimally advertises)?
Do you think recreation agencies take full advantage of advertising techniques –
especially after seeing this film? What might be some of the reasons why or why
not?
