The Renaissance The future is looking brighter. The Renaissance Renaissance means “rebirth”. This was period in European culture that saw much growth in the areas of art, literature, and the humanities. Europe was emerging from the dark ages, and looked back in time to see what they needed to do to make life better. They decided they needed to learn. Renaissance Begins The Renaissance began in Italy. Italy had become prosperous from trade and had “extra money” to finance artists work. Florence, Venice, Genoa, Milan, and Rome were all cities with ties to Renaissance growth. City States Wealthy city states in Italy competed with each other to see who could produce the most artwork and sculptures. In many ways it became a battle of who was classier. Wealthy families like the Medicis used their money to sponsor artist and their work. Johannes Gutenberg One of the keys to the spread of Renaissance idea was the printing press. In the 1450s, Johannes Gutenberg created a movable type printing press. This allowed more information to be printed in a shorter amount of time. It also cut down on the price of printed material, and made it more accessible for more people. Renaissance Artist The Renaissance saw an explosion of new artistic styles and techniques. Artist during this era would be able to make money for themselves just completing art projects for people, instead of having other occupations. This was the beginning of the “art as a job” era. Michaelangelo Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most famous characters of the Renaissance. He was an artist, a writer, a sculptor, and a scientist. Most of what we know about da Vinci comes from his notebooks that were partially written in code. Carravaggio While not a Renaissance artist, his works were greatly influenced by Renaissance artist even though he lived 300 years later. His style of artwork is called “baroque”. Humanism This became popular during the end of the dark ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. Humanism was a view of the world that focused on human values and morals. Humanist thought that individuals were important to society, and that religion and reason could be balanced.
